Selection of the seed:
Choosing a seed of high quality is the foundation of a successful production of rice. Before all other steps are followed farmers are to select the batch of seeds that they are to grow. There are many criteria that must be acknowledged in order to ensure that the seeds chosen of each variety are of the highest quality possible.
‘Seed’ is referred to as a living organism that requires special attention in order to produce a good crop that year. The seeds must be grown, harvested and processed appropriately; this will lead to a seed with a higher capability, hence a greater crop production. Rice growers are able to approximate the potential of their upcoming harvest by the quality of the rice seed that they have selected. A rule of thumb is that if a seed is of a high quality, then the quantity of crops grown can be increased by around 5 to 20%
The following criterion is used by farmers to judge whether or not seed is ‘good’ or ‘bad.’
A good seed will posses the subsequent qualities:
o Genetically pure – of only that specific variety of rice, lacking hints of any other assortment.
o Capable of germinating at a rate of 80% or higher. It is uneconomical to plant seedlings that have a lower chance of sprouting.
o Lacking any disease that may spread- lacking weed seeds- and free of insects.
o Dried to a have a moisture rate lower than 15% (If the seed has high moisture content then during the period of storage prior to plantation, the seeds will begin to rot)
The selection of seeds is a major aspect of the rice growing business. The vigorous growth led on by the good quality of the seeds, reduces problems brought upon by weeds, insect pests and disease. All of these factors combined can contribute to a higher yield, and overall, a more productive rice farm.
