Rice, the foundation of millions of dishes consumed by human each year, is the keystone of the grass family. Origination in Asia, for the past four thousand years, it has been under intensive cultivation, and recently has begun to disperse across the rest of the globe. Around the earth almost a third of the population depend on rice in order to be supplied with essential nutrition needed.
The rice’s grass can be found underneath the genus Oryza. Around the world it is possible to find many varieties of rice grown for human consumption. A few of the more common assortments are; the long grain rices such as basmati, and jasmine, and the short grains- Arborio, and those that are used to make sushi. When the outer part of the grain, the bran, is left on, the resulting product is considered to be ‘brown rice,’ different to white rice, which is grain with the husk of bran removed.
This grain can be spectacularly versatile, with its ability to be ground into a form of fine dust, a flour for the gluten intolerant, steamed, fried, cooked to become paellas, risottos, deserts, puddings and even alcohol. The wonders of this tiny grain are simply astonishing. Read on more to discover the production, and effects just a mere grain of rice can have on the world!
